wool-applique-colour-complements Kathleen’s new WOOL APPLIQUE project, Butterfly Sampler by Sue Spargo.  As I mentioned previously, the background is a soft green wool and the entire sampler measures 16×22.

Butterfly #2 today.

The butterfly base is a hand dyed purple wool.  The body is embellished with a fluffy fiber couched. The upper wings are bordered with a backstitch in sparkle chainette – you could substitute Kreinik braid for this or another metallic thread.  The wings are layered with a bold cotton print bordered with a coral stitch in a size 5 perle cotton. The inner layer is a darker purple wool bordered with chain stitch and embellished with either seed stitches or small French knots – I’m not sure which!  The lower wings are bordered with tiny bullion stitches and embellished with picot stitches.

The pattern calls for a fabric rectangle in the background which is bordered with coral stitch and embellished with running stitches.

If you are not familiar with these stitches, you can find video tutorials on Mary Corbet’s NeedleNThread.

Thank you Kathleen. I will be sharing more butterflies in coming weeks.

Just a reminder to my customers.  Please remember I always welcome good quality photos of any project completed using Colour Complements threads 🙂
