It is always exciting to begin a new project.  Today, I am thrilled to introduce Baby Blooms!  This is my friend Kathleen’s recent wool applique project.

The pattern is designed by the talented Australian designer, Wendy Williams.  It measures 20 inches square and Kathleen has chosen to create this as a wall hanging.  Check with your local quilt shop as they should be able to order it for you.  Otherwise, Wendy offers it on her Flying Fish Kits website.

The pattern consists of a series of elements to create the overall design.  I will be featuring each element individually over the coming months.  All are photographed as close-ups since I have a feeling you may want to stitch this yourself!

Let us start with the background.

Kathleen opted for a grey and white polka dot cotton fabric as her background.  I think this is a fantastic choice.  Have I mentioned before I love polka dots!

This is the butterfly embellished using Colour Complements size 5 perle cotton.  The body is a dark purple wool embellished with French knots and bordered with stem stitch.  Love the stem stitched antennae.

The wing uses two different shapes – the petals are bordered with backstitch and the ripple is embellished with French knots.  The rings are buttonhole wheels stitched in place.

I always admire Kathleen’s use of colour.  Wait until you see what she has created in the next Baby Blooms post!
