wool applique butterflies using Colour Complements threads

Another butterfly in Kathleen’s WOOL APPLIQUE project Butterfly Sampler by Sue Spargo.  Kathleen opted for a soft green wool background and the entire sampler measures 16×22.

Kathleen chose softer more muted colours for the majority of her butterflies.  The exception is this darker purple butterfly.  This fits in well with her overall plan which you will see in the future.

The body is embellished with fly stitch in a chenille fibre.  The upper wings are bordered with bullion stitches.  These have been overlaid  with a cotton patterned fabric bordered with a bulk fibre.  Couching and embellishing with beads followed this.  Kathleen added a small circle of velvet which is bordered with chain stitch and a cluster of bullions in the center.

The lower wings are bordered with chain stitch.  She had fun accenting the wings with double cast-on stitches in the center.

I love the  ric rac seam treatment in the background with French knots and trellis circles.

Colour Complements threads are great for embellishing wool applique.  Check out the SHOP .  If you are not familiar with any of the stitches, you can find video tutorials on Mary Corbet’s NeedleNThread.
