WOOL APPLIQUE, hand dyed embroidery threads For those of you who have been following my blog you may remember I experimented with wool applique last year only to discover I have a sensitivity to wool, something I should have remembered from childhood as I never buy wool clothing.  Alas, I remember now!

My friend and very talented stitcher Kathleen has graciously agreed to share one of her projects she completed last year.  Kathleen has been quilting for many years and she particularly enjoys hand work and especially embellishing wool applique quilts.

Kathleen chose a pattern from Kim Schaefer’s “Flower Festival” book.  The book features 50 blocks of appliqued flowers and bugs.  There are a total of nine projects in a contemporary folk-art style focusing on garden themes.  All the blocks measure 8×8 so you may create either the quilts featured in the book OR mix and match to create more personalized quilts.

The pattern chosen is “Bloomin Beauties”and measures 56×38.  The background blocks are a heavy black flannel and all the hand dyed wool for the appliqued flowers is available from Wool Penny Rugs.  She has embellished each of her flowers using Colour Complements threads – yes, ALL MY THREADS!  Naturally I am thrilled and really excited to share this project.

Thank you so very much for agreeing to share this project Kathleen.  Stay tuned for the first block on Friday!
