needlepoint-card

Our latest blog series features this beautiful Ginkgo Leaf pattern that Dominique created after she picked up a leaf during her walks. This idea is an expansion of a blog series that we highlighted last year, where we created gift cards that showcased needlepoint leaves.

If you are not familiar with Ginkgo, it is a large tree with fan-shaped leaves, which also makes a great pattern for needlepoint. The sweeping curves of the leaf create a simple yet striking design that works well in various stitch techniques. Whether you’re working on a small project or something more detailed, the unique shape of the Ginkgo leaf adds a natural flow and texture to your work, making it a versatile choice for needlepoint

This month’s Ginkgo Leaf Pattern

Dominique stitches a lot of not only my samples but samples specifically for guild cards. Once she started with her first gingko she opted to stitch several more. Throughout the year I’ll be sharing a number of her cards and design variations.

For this blog post, I’m featuring the first of the different Ginkgo designs she created which uses a very fresh, bright and lovely tropical colour palette.

All the samples are stitched using Colour Complements flosses combined with some solid colour floss. She used 4 strands of floss for the above sample on 18-count mono canvas. The sample measures about 2 to 3 inches square but can be customised depending on the size card you choose to use. This is a great idea requiring minimal finishing other than bordering.

The stitched sample was trimmed and a border stitch was added then the sample was glued to the card. There are some pre-made cards with cutouts so check out your local stationary stores.

Using Cotton Floss In Needlepoint

For this Ginkgo leaf pattern, two Colour Complements flosses were used along with a number of solid colours of DMC floss. Dominique fussy cut Colour #80 using only the pale orange

  • Colour #75 – a blend of green, orange and golden yellow
  • Colour #80 – a blend of lime green and pale orange

Given the cost of gift cards currently, I think this is a great alternative for those of us who stitch. You could easily cross-stitch a ginkgo leaf versus needlepoint so the options are endless. Stay tuned for more ginkgo leaves coming soon.
