Complementary pastel colours open up creative possibilities in wool appliqué projects. You can create a visual design that delights the eye by pairing soft and harmonious hues. We discuss using complementary colours several times in different posts, but we rarely discuss how this would look for pastel colours!

Complementary colours are hues opposite each other on the colour wheel, creating a harmonious contrast. This combination often involves soft and delicate shades in pastels that make a soothing and balanced effect. By pairing complementary pastels in your wool appliqué project, you can achieve a delightful visual balance that draws the eye.

This colour combination also creates a beautiful balance between harmony and contrast. This contrast elevates individual elements of your wool appliqué while maintaining an overall sense of unity. This interplay of colours adds visual interest and prevents your design from feeling flat or monotonous. The result is a project combining the best of both worlds: a visually stunning design that achieves both harmony and cohesion.

What were the complementary pastel colours used in this design

We started this wool applique project with a 2-inch blue wool circle bordered with basque stitch using size five perle in Colour #175.

A smaller pale pink wool flower was added and bordered with backstitch using size five perle in Colour #41 – we also recommend substituting it with Colour #78, a bold pink!  The center was created with trellis stitch using size five perle colour 41.  Each petal was accented with bullion loops in size eight perle in Colour #182. This colour has since been discontinued, but you could easily substitute it with your choice of colours. We added the outer border to finish off the project, using a quaker stitch in size five, in Colour #162
