Yes, I promised an example, of an AUTUMN inspired needlepoint stitch sample! About a month ago I mentioned I was getting a bit bored with creating needlepoint stitch samples. Well, I was inspired when I received my summer edition of Needlepoint Now. There are several counted canvas projects and since I had just finished dyeing my autumn inspired colours, I thought I should experiment.
The very talented Susan Portra designed a Christmas project which you will find on page 41 in the July/August 2015 issue of Needlepoint Now. I loved the central star so this was my inspiration point. The center leaf shapes are stitched with a gold sparkle chainette I selected from my stash. The inner leaves were stitched using a size 5 perle cotton, colour #191. The star is surrounded with a basketweave stitched using 4 strands of cotton floss, colour #188.
How this Autumn Needlepoint Stitch Sample was created
At this point I knew I wanted to keep it simple so instead of following the pattern which is for a larger project, I decided to border the star with my flat ribbon, colour #13. This was couched in placing using gold Hi-Lights. Once I reached this point I had trouble deciding how I would complete the outer four corners so I ended up repeating basketweave but using a size 5 perle cotton colour #188. ** When I stitched the basketweave I moved around the area to avoid striping of colours therefore resulting in a very random colour distribution. I’m very happy with the results – now to decide on finishing….. I used 18 count mono canvas and the square measures about 2 – 2 1/2 inches.
Thank you Susan Portra and Needlepoint Now for INSPIRATION! A very SPECIAL NEW project on Friday!
