Today, we’re featuring a variation of Dominique’s Ginkgo leaf cards, using a gobelin stitch border to create a little more contrast between the pattern and background.
You may be familiar with the different Ginkgo leaf pattern variations that we’ve highlighted over the last few months. The last card featured was made using black cardstock. This time around, we’re switching things up and using grey cardstock to create a balanced finish between the pattern and overall design!
Why did we use a Gobelin Stitch for this design?
The sample has a Gobelin border and has been trimmed measuring a little under 3 inches square. For those new to needlepoint, you can create a Gobelin stitch by stitching a series of overlapping, diagonal stitches throughout a pattern or design. The result is a very textured and filled appearance. I love the use of this stitch for this particular design as it creates a rich texture, adding depth and interest to the finished piece. We also used contrasting colours to add even more depth to the overall look and feel of this design.
The border beautifully frames the sample, creating a striking contrast against the soft grey background. The Ginkgo leaf is then stitched using four strands of cotton floss, adding a little more brightness to the design. For the background, a Milanese stitch is used with size 12 perle cotton.
Colours Used In This Ginkgo Leaf
- Colour 65: A range of teal greens that brings balance and depth.
- Colour 80: A fresh blend of lime green and pale orange, creating a little bit of brightness within the design.
- Colour 14: An ocean-inspired blend of blues and greens that brings the entire piece together. .
- Various Solid Colour Cotton Flosses: These add additional dimension and complexity to the overall piece.
Together, these colours and stitching techniques create a captivating composition that draws the eye and showcases the beauty of the Ginkgo leaf. Keep your eyes peeled as we feature another variation of this Ginkgo leaf design.
