Today’s canvas sampler was inspired by my love and passion for stitching counted canvas projects. Most of you also likely know that I was introduced to counted canvas by YOU! A number of years ago, I started receiving questions about colour combinations for this technique – not only did I research to learn more, I started experimenting.
I’d actually never seen or heard of counted canvas before so it was an adventure. I found it easy to catch onto and an amazing variety in stitches.
Last year we featured a mini sampler series as well as some published patterns. This year we are featuring a variety of counted canvas sampler patterns available through various designers.
Let’s start with our first counted canvas sampler
Today’s canvas sampler is colourful.
The pattern was designed by Jennie Wolter from the Calgary Guild of Needle and Fibre Arts. It was featured in the Embroidery Canada magazine in the fall of 2021. Volume 49, Number 1 on page 13. You will need to be a member of the Embroidery Association of Canada to receive this publication. Follow the link to view their website.
Since we are featuring BLUE this month, we have included some blues in our sample.
The canvas sampler measures approximately 2 ½ inches square stitched on 18 count canvas with size 5 perle cottons. We’ve used the following colours
- Colour #28 – medium to darker blues
- Colour #175 – light blues
- Colour #67 – yellows
- Colour #36 – orange/red/orange
- Colour 186 – purple, teal and blue – Lorene used this colour combo in her Bargello Muse design
Dominique added her own border using Colour #51 and Colour #186 in a size 5 Perle cotton BUT you could easily border it with any of the colours used above.
It was a fun and fast stitch, great for an ornament or box top. Hope we’ve inspired you to try a counted canvas sampler yourself!
