Introducing my Mini Sampler Series!
If you are a member of the American Needlepoint Guild, you may be familiar with “holed up minis.” If not, these are small projects introduced weekly on the American Needlepoint Guild website complimentary to members and non-members. Various designers offer these projects to help keep stitchers focused on positive things during COVID. Two of the projects posted last year were samplers designed by Marilyn Owen.
Marilyn, you inspired me – thank you!
Since so many of us are spending more time at home why not offer a series of complimentary “mini” samplers for you to stitch. So, my stitch group has been busy.
What can you expect with the Mini Sampler Series?
My plan is to post one sampler each month BUT this will depend if they prove popular. Each sampler is counted canvas needlepoint. They are all stitched on white 18 count mono canvas and measure approximately 3 inches square. Now, you could certainly use a coloured canvas if you wish but white works. All will be stitched with Colour Complements threads AND perhaps some solids or metallics. All samplers are either original designs or sourced.
For original patterns, I will provide either a diagram or photo (or both) showing the placement of stitches, thread colours and sizes used. Sadly, I am simply not a designer hence more than this would be challenging. Where possible I will include a source for the stitches but otherwise, they can be found online or likely in your personal library i.e. book stash! On some occasions I may provide a stitch diagram for stitches that may be slightly harder to find.
For sourced designs, I will provide a link where you can find the pattern.
So, let’s get started with my January Mini Sampler
Since we are in the middle of winter on the west coast, I thought it would be fun to share some BOLD & BRIGHT colours. These colours make me think of summer and warmer weather!
The design is very simple diagonal rows of the same stitch in different colours so ideal for a beginner. While this sampler measures 58 x 58 threads or 3 ¼ inches in diameter, it would be easy to adjust to the size you wish. Five colours in a size 5 perle cotton were used.
- colour 3 – a summer blend of coral, green and pink
- colour 18 – greens
- colour 30 – pink, yellow and orange
- colour 66 – orange
- colour 67 – yellows
What stitches were used?
- The rows are a diagonal scotch stitch variation
- The border is a cross stitch
I would recommend starting with the center row and alternating the colours as shown in the diagram. For those of you who are a bit more adventurous, perhaps you would like to change the placement of the colours!
I hope you enjoy my first mini sampler. Stay tuned next month for a NEW SAMPLER! Thank you Marie.
