My button cluster in Block #12 in my new CRAZY QUILTING project – Black Butterflies.
This year I chose a bold primary colour palette for my crazy quilt project. If you are interested in following this project, you can find all the posts under “Black Butterflies” in the right sidebar under Categories.
Button clusters provide great creative opportunities in size, colours and choice of buttons. They bring back fond memories at times too.
I have opted to use a green and metallic button that I picked up in Paris during my travels several years ago. I will mention that I “always” try to find crazy quilting supplies when I travel. When I was in Paris I stayed at an apartment in Montmarte and ended up walking by a button shop followed by a trim shop – bliss!! I had looked up the trim shop prior to my departure but came across the button shop by accident.
Since my focus fabric has a black background, I wanted to add hits of black and white throughout. So, I added the black and white button and a starfish shaped charm I picked up at our local thrift store. I think it was part of an earring. They have bags of “one offs” at times which are assorted jewelry. I thought this added a bit of whimsy to this cluster. Last but not least are one of my metal butterflies – this one is a copper shade. Further embellishing is randomly placed French knots using very velvet petite.
I opted to leave the narrow black trim plain. The leaves are stitched using size 5 perle cotton. Next time I will use size 8 as I find them a bit bulky.
The final reveal of this block next!
