I have commented many times previously how fun it is for me to receive emails with photos from customer projects using my threads. Seeing your creativity come to life is truly the “why” behind Colour Complements! Last year, I received a wonderful email from Elyse sharing the exquisite project you see above.
If you’ve followed me for some time, you will know that I don’t personally do cross-stitch, but I have many talented customers who do. Over the years, my hand-dyed needlepoint floss has become incredibly popular for a wide range of fun projects. While I started out only dyeing the three sizes of perle cotton, the “hand-dyed floss revolution” sparked by my customers has been absolutely AMAZING!
Why use hand-dyed floss: The “Secret Weapon” for your Next Project
For all you floss enthusiasts, using variegated cross-stitch thread is like having a secret weapon in your sewing basket. Each skein is a tiny bit of colour variation that can transform a good project into an absolutely STUNNING piece of work.
Think of using hand-dyed floss like painting with a brush that changes colours automatically—it adds depth and movement to every stitch without any extra effort on your part. Unlike mass-produced threads, my artisan thread samplers and floss bring unique, organic colour transitions that machine-dyed threads just can’t replicate. In a sense, no two skeins are ever exactly the same!
Spotlight on Elyse’s Butterfly: A Look At Colour #23
Elyse chose a striking butterfly design by Tereena Clarke from Artecy. By making a few intentional choices, she created a high-contrast masterpiece that showcases the potential of hand-dyed embroidery thread:
- The Fabric: Black 18-count Aida (27.5″ wide x 17.5″ high).
- The Thread: Two strands of Colour #23.
- The Result: The butterfly design measures 16.5″ wide x 15.5″ high and looks virtually illuminated.
Colour #23 is an Easter-inspired blend of yellow, blue, and coral, with subtle hints of green. It is showcased beautifully against the black background, and I imagine it looks even more beautiful in person! This hand-dyed needlepoint floss brings the design to life, creating a level of dimension that standard, flat threads simply can’t achieve.
Pro-Tips for Your Next Project
Experimenting with hand-dyed needlepoint floss is a beautiful way to elevate your hobby into an art form. Here is a little “no-fuss” advice for those ready to dive in:
- Embrace the Story: Each strand tells a story through its colour shifts. Let the thread do the shading for you!
- Contrast is Key: As seen in Elyse’s butterfly, using a dark background can make variegated colours “pop” with incredible intensity.
- Enjoy the Process: These threads make even the simplest patterns feel fresh and exciting to stitch.
Thank you, Elyse, for sharing this beautiful project and inspiring us all to try something new!
