I have had a long-standing interest in Bargello so I knew I wanted to include a Bargello needlework sampler when we started discussing our Mini Sampler series.
What is Bargello Needlework Anyways?
Bargello is a type of needlepoint consisting of upright flat stitches laid in a mathematical pattern to create motifs. The patterns are naturally geometric and while flat stitches are basic and easy to stitch, the patterns require concentration when counting. I learned this early following several mistakes in counting!
Traditionally, Bargello was stitched in wool on canvas seen most commonly in pillows or upholstery. Our Bargello Needlework Sampler is stitched with Colour Complements size 5 Perle cotton (and one size 8 Perle).
Colour combinations are endless but I have found that combining variegated combinations with solids or monochromatic blends work well. You can see this in the example with Colour #183 which is a blend of purples, Colour #29 a blend of tans and Colour #65 which is a blend of teal green. Colour #186 is my “focus” colour for the design featuring teal, purple and deep blue.
What colours were used for this sample? Here’s a list:
- Colours #18, #29, #65 and #186 in a size 5 Perle cotton
- Colour #183 in a size 8 Perle cotton
I have not created a thread kit for this sampler as all these colours are available as regular stock in my shop AND each of you will likely have your own preferences.
Hope you enjoy the sampler. Stay tuned for another one next month!
Just a quick note to advise that I will be commencing my summer blog break at this time. I’ll be posting once weekly between today (July 21st) resuming regular posting again on Monday August 23rd. The shop remains open 24/7 and I will be responding to emails regularly. What am I up to – planning for 2022!!
