What a Hoot | Winky
Winky is the second owl in my ‘What a Hoot’ series designed exclusively for Colour Complements by Kam Wenzloff.
Winky comes in a custom, hand-dyed, LIMITED EDITION KIT that contains:
- all hand-dyed threads required to complete this exclusive design
- eye and beak
- an additional skein of perle cotton to create the braid that outlines Winky for finishing purposes
- the Winky pattern (PDF emailed once payment is processed)’
A little about the “What a Hoot” series:
‘What a Hoot’ is a series of SIX custom owls. A new owl will be introduced every month starting in April through September. As the series moves along, the designs become a little more challenging to stitch providing a good progression. Winky would be enjoyable for advanced beginner’s to experienced stitchers!
More about the owls:
- each owl measures approximately 4 inches square
- all the owls are the same shape BUT are different, one-of-a-kind, exclusive designs
- colours used are different with each owl
- each design offers a variety of stitches
Kit contents are generous and, while they do not contain enough threads to stitch a second owl, there is enough extra to stitch part of a second side. This will provide you with the opportunity to begin creating a double-sided owl!
All six would create a fabulous owl-themed mobile for a nursery or owl garland to display in the home!
Please note: you will need to purchase 18 count mono canvas from your local needlework shop or from your favourite online shop
SO MUCH FUN to stitch!

Eagerly anticipated, I couldn’t wait for this owl to come out. The threads are gorgeous, both colour and texture. I love that I get to try different fibers in each project. Thanks for a lovely design and threads to complete it!

The owls are so much fun to stitch. Great directions for stitches and threads are wonderful. Can’t wait to stitch the rest of the owls as they come out.

Love the vibrancy of the thread colors! You open the package and lovely packets of color spill out onto your work area. Doesn’t matter if the fiber is silk or perle cotton, the threads are lovely to stitch with. The saturated colors enhance the project – just love the look of the finished piece.
Orders are easily placed and promptly filled. They arrive beautifully packaged. Can’t say enough about quality product and prompt customer service at Colour Complements.

It was the colors that drew me to this little sassy owl. I’d never worked with such bright greens and yellows. It didn’t help my cause when I picked a stitch that was unknown to me. It has been a whole lot of years since I’ve come across a new stitch and I’d forgotten how to approach it so I could pick up on its rhythm. Finally figured it out and I just love it. The stitch guide went a long way towards my mastering the stitch so was an immense help. Despite the challenges this piece brought to me, that little wink kept me at it.
