Introducing Waddle: A Counted Needlepoint Penguin Ornament Pattern

Once again, Kam Wenzloff and I have collaborated on a brand-new project, and we are excited to share Waddle with you!

As many of you already know, I always showcase counted canvas designs. Similar to the owls featured in our What A Hoot series, I personally loved the idea of penguins. Kam and I discussed this, and she has come up with what we feel is an adorable design.

Today, I want to share a creative adaptation using our stunning Color #44 rainbow blend. This versatile thread has been a long-time favourite in various projects, from our Welcome Gnome series featuring Florentina to the eye-catching Rainbow Ribbons needlepoint pattern that was featured on the pages of Needlepoint Now.

The rainbow ribbons needlepoint pattern that we’re featuring in this stitch sample is the perfect example of taking an existing needlepoint pattern and making it uniquely yours. Our Rainbow Ribbons project beautifully demonstrates this process. The original inspiration came from Patricia Mazu’s “Crescents: A heart design,” published in the January/February 2022 issue of Needle Pointers. While the original pattern featured a heart shape, we reimagined it into a rectangular design perfect for a small ornament.

Many needleworkers faithfully follow needlepoint patterns stitch by stitch, especially if new to needlepoint – and there’s nothing wrong with that! However, there’s a whole world of creativity waiting when you take inspiration and adapt it to create your designs – think of these patterns as a collection of elements you can mix, match, and transform.

How We Achieved this Rainbow Ribbons Needlepoint Pattern Design

The rainbow ribbons needlepoint pattern sample was stitched on 18-count mono canvas and measures 3 ¼ x 3 inches. In this pattern, we are showcasing our rainbow blend, colour #44. Colours used in our Rainbow Ribbons Needlepoint Pattern include the following:

Colour #44 blends brilliant blues, fuchsias, light golden browns and hints of greens. Because it is multi-coloured, there are many opportunities to create various colour palettes. A small amount of metallic thread was added to enhance this design.

Remember the nostalgic moments of exploring Mum’s or Grandma’s button jar? I know I’ll be dating myself here, but as a quilting enthusiast who often loves quilting with buttons and beads, I think of those moments fondly. I’ve been building my collection of treasured trinkets, especially after having the fantastic opportunity to go through one of my quilting friends’ button jars (thank you, Pat!).

This type of quilting opens up endless creative possibilities. Button clusters are an inexpensive option for embellishing your projects. I love adding them, and I’ll be talking more about them when we start stitching.

For now, focus on choosing buttons in various colours, sizes, textures, and shapes for your projects. Thrift stores frequently have mixed bags of buttons, perfect to add to your stash. Etsy shops usually sell buttons, particularly glass, which is terrific for quilting with buttons and beads.

What About Beads & Beadwork in Quilting?

Seed beads are the most common bead used in quilting. They work beautifully in seam treatments when quilting with buttons and beads. I would also recommend your quilting with buttons and beads collection, including tear drops, just a few, which make excellent wings for bugs. Daggar beads are great for dragonfly wings in quilting with button and bead designs. Bugle and various shaped beads like leaves and flowers are good additions to your quilting with buttons and beads stash.

A small collection of sequins is worthwhile. They come in various shapes and sizes, many available in Etsy shops for your quilting projects with buttons and beads.

I always like to have a small selection of charms when quilting with buttons and beads. Again, Etsy is a good source for these. Pewter charms work very well versus gold and silver as they blend easily with various fabric colors.

Sequins are another great addition to quilting with buttons and beads. They come in various shapes and sizes, and many are available on Etsy for your collection.
