If you are not familiar with TEMARI balls then you are in for a treat today. I was very surprised at the recent EAC seminar when I was presented with one of Verna’s beautiful temari balls as a gift. She had made it especially for me using Colour Complements threads. Verna specializes in temari balls and she will now be starting her 200th ball! Yes, 200! She tells me she needs to really think about the design for this special ball.

o, the pattern above is “Rose Garden” designed by Barbara Seuss. Verna used size 8 perle cotton to complete this temari.

TEMARI are Japanese thread balls meaning “hand ball” in Japanese. They are a folk art form originating in China and later introduced to Japan. They were originally created as children’s toys. Historically remnants of old kimonos were used as wadding to form the ball. Today many use styrofoam balls and wrap these with a base of thread. Designs are embroidered to the core base often in geometric patterns.

You can find more of Verna’s temari balls HERE.

Thank you Marilyn for delivering my lovely surprise and thank you to Barbara for the design. Thank you to Verna for another beauty. I have added it to my temari jar!

Verna chose a beautiful orange background which I feel showcases the colour palette beautifully. The pattern is Interlocking Diamonds from a book by Margaret Wood.
Verna used three colours of perle cotton

Colour #29

Colour #127

Colour #19 – substitute a solid bold yellow similar to DMC #307

She added some bling with some beads and a very fine gold thread.

Verna used size 8 perle cotton in the following colours

Colour #1

Colour #134

Colour #41

If you are not familiar with Temari they are Japanese thread balls meaning “hand ball” in Japanese.

If it interests you to read more about Temari or attempt some yourself, you may like to check out Barbara Seuss’ website

Thank you Verna.

A new TEMARI ball to add to my growing collection and it is a beauty. I have mentioned before that Verna, a fellow Canadian loves creating Temari balls. This is one of her original patterns and I am thrilled with the results. This colour palette is enhanced by a gorgeous lime green background which I think really make the colours pop. Brilliant choice Verna – FANTASTIC!

Verna used size 8 perle cotton in the following colours, one skein of each colour

Colour #26

Colour #29

Colour #30

Colour #187

A lovely TEMARI to share today. This is a Christmas themed Temari created by one of my customers, Becky.

TEMARI are Japanese thread balls meaning “hand ball” in Japanese. They are a folk art form originating in China and later introduced to Japan. Originally they were created as children’s toys using remnants of old kimonos to form the fall. Today most use styrofoam.

Becky used one of my size 5 perle Trios, Colour #7 which is a lovely red to create her Temari. This is her ORIGINAL design which she called Rose Noelle. It is named for her granddaughter. The holly leaves are woven and the berries are French knots. She learned the technique during a challenge on the Temari challenge group.

Thank you for sharing this beauty Becky. I have a feeling this will be a cherished creation for the future.
