This month, we are featuring a slightly different sample and bargello pattern in our bargello series. We decided to split the stitch area in three sections, very similar to the bargello mini sampler I stitched last year. This provides the opportunity to demonstrate how the same colour palette appears but stitched with different stitches.

The result is a beautiful samples offering various bargello patterns that highlight different techniques!

How We Created These Bargello Patterns

The sample measures 3 ¼ inches on 18 count mono canvas and is stitched using size 5 Perle cottons.

We selected a bright palette of colours including

• Colour #47
• Colour #67
• Colour #187
• Colour #188
• Colour #191

We also added DMC 936 which is a solid green, BUT you could use Colour #18 from the Colour Complements collection.

There were three different stitches to create these particular bargello patterns.These include the Aurora Borealis Variation 1, Lanterns and Boxed Hungarian Point. All these stitches can be found in the Bargello Stitch book by Laura and Lynsey Angell.

This month’s needlepoint bargello sample features a selection of fall colours, specifically brown to create this brown bargello stitch sample. I used to think brown was dull!  Why would you want to use brown other than for trees or branches in a painted canvas?!

Well, I’ve changed my tune through the years and find that incorporating brown in a palette can look very beautiful. It’s a beautiful neutral colour and when you combine it cleverly with other colours, the results can be absolutely stunning.

Today we are showcasing brown in a peaks stitch. I thought the stitch is aptly named given the peaks and valleys. 

What Colours Did We Use For This Brown Bargello Stitch Sample

The sample above measures about 3 ½ x 3 inches on an 18-count mono canvas. We have opted to use the following colours:

• Colour# 29
• Colour #35
• Colour #36
• Colour #57

This fall-inspired bargello pattern was sparked by the beautiful sunsets that we experience here on the west coast! While this part of the world gets its fair share of rain, the rare day we are blessed with sunshine also means that the horizon puts on an AMAZING show of colours the moment the sun sets. This is especially true during the brisk upcoming fall months.

Naturally, we had to pick a beautiful orange hue for this particular project. Colour #36 was the perfect blend of orange and golden orange!

The sample measures a little under 3 inches and is stitched using size 5 Perle cotton in the following colours:

Our bargello sample features yellows this month and incorporates a flame stitch technique to create a beautiful flame pattern. This traditional flame stitch technique is sometimes referred to as Florentine stitch which of course is the foundation for most bargello designs.

As the name suggests, the flame stitch technique creates this beautiful fiery pattern. It’s only natural to incorporate bright, yellow hues to highlight the stunning design that this technique is capable of creating!

Since we are featuring green this month, I thought it only fitting to start with a Bargello showcasing green!

If you are new to this series, each month I’ll be featuring a Bargello sample which is designed to inspire you to either stitch some Bargello yourself OR perhaps inspire some new colour combinations for your next needlework project.

Since we are featuring greens this month in celebration of St. Patrick’s day, we felt a sample highlighting greens would be appropriate. The sample above features Colour #18 which is a beautiful combination of medium to dark value greens AND just happens to be my best selling colour!!!

This is not really surprising, given that green is so versatile and can be used in a variety of different projects..

How Was Our Green  Bargello Stitched?

This sample measures 2 ½ x 3 ½ on an 18-count canvas but remember, this is just a sample and you could stitch it any size you wish. We used Colour #18 in size 5 Perle cotton, as well as DMC 676, which is a light gold and DMC 783, which is a darker value of gold. The colour DMC 504 was added which is a gorgeous light blue/green.

How We Created Today’s Stash Buster Bargello Stitch Design

Today’s stash buster bargello stitch design sample measures approximately 3-inches square on an 18-count canvas. This is a great sample as it uses a variety of size 5 Perle cotton in different colour combinations.

You would not need much of any particular colour. When you are choosing your colours, make sure you place contrasting colours next to one another so the pattern can be better visualized. Some of the colours used in this design are

• Colour #67
• Colour #45
• Colour #3
• Colour #55
• Colour #36
